Mount Kongo Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Chihayaakasaka, Japan.
Mount Kongo Ropeway is an aerial tramway that spans 1323 meters across forested slopes, carrying passengers between a base station and an upper station in roughly six minutes. Each cabin holds up to 46 people and was engineered to provide continuous transportation up the mountainside.
The ropeway began operations on April 17, 1966, opening a new route to the mountain for the local community and visitors. Service ended in November 2019 after more than 50 years of continuous operation.
The ropeway connects visitors to Mount Kongo, the highest peak in Osaka Prefecture, where numerous hiking trails and seasonal activities take place.
The line operates best on clear days when visibility extends across the surrounding landscape and nearby prefectures. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the upper station opens onto trails and natural areas worth exploring at your own pace.
The village government of Chihayaakasaka owns this transportation system, with operations managed by Gourmet Kineya, a restaurant company.
