Matsubishi Department Store, Japanese department store in Shizuoka, Japan
Matsubishi Department Store was a large retail building in Hamamatsu with eight floors and a basement level. The structure housed clothing, household items, and various merchandise departments under a single roof.
The store opened on June 1, 1937 as Hamamatsu's first department store. It survived World War II bombing and reopened in 1949, but closed in 2001 due to financial difficulties from increased competition.
The site no longer exists as the building was demolished between 2006 and 2012. Visitors interested in its history can explore local archives and museums in Hamamatsu for documentation and photographs.
In 1956 it installed the region's first escalator, followed four years later by the prefecture's first full building air conditioning system. These innovations made it a showcase for modern retail technology at the time.
