Sagano Scenic Railway, Railway line in Arashiyama district, Japan.
The Sagano Scenic Railway is a seven-kilometer line along the Hozugawa River between Arashiyama and Kameoka districts, running through mountain gorges and wooded valleys. Trains roll slowly past rock formations and over bridges, while the river flows below through the narrow valley.
The line originated as part of the Sanin Main Line in the late 19th century, serving passenger and freight traffic through the mountains. After a more direct tunnel route was built, the old line was abandoned until it was revived as a tourist railway.
Train attendants dressed in traditional uniforms accompany the ride, speaking about the landscape and enriching the experience with small details. At the end of each season, illuminated evening rides run with lanterns lighting up the gorge.
Trains run between March and November, with departures hourly during morning and afternoon. The ride takes about 25 minutes and ends at a small station, from where you can take a boat back to Arashiyama or continue on foot.
The open car at the end of the train has no windows and runs even in cooler temperatures, bringing the sound of the river and wind directly inside. This car is especially popular with photographers who want to capture the valley without glass in the way.
