Zaimokuza, Coastal town and beach in Kamakura, Japan
Zaimokuza is a coastal town with a long sandy beach on the Shonan shoreline near Kamakura, where on clear days the silhouette of Enoshima Island and Mount Fuji appear on the horizon. The beach is divided into sections, with some areas set aside for swimming and others for quieter use.
The beach has been used for swimming since the late 19th century, making it one of the older seaside spots on the Shonan coast. Over the decades it became a regular destination for people coming from the Kamakura area and from Tokyo.
The beach appears in Soseki Natsume's novel 'Kokoro', one of the most read books in Japan, and visitors sometimes walk along the shore looking for the scenes described in the story. The connection to this novel gives the place a quiet literary weight that goes beyond a typical seaside outing.
Zaimokuza is a short bus ride from Kamakura Station, so it fits easily into a day trip from the city. Rental equipment like chairs, parasols, and life jackets is available on site, which means you do not need to bring much gear.
The beach serves as a training ground for lifeguards, which is something most visitors do not notice during a regular summer visit. In the same season, evening fireworks are permitted here, which is not the case at all beaches in the area.
