Tokai-Kanjo Expressway, Toll road in Tokai region, Japan
Tokai-Kanjo Expressway is a toll ring road in the Tokai region of Japan, spanning more than 150 kilometers from Toyota in the south to Ogaki in the north. The route runs through flatlands and gentle hills, crossing several prefectures and creating a bypass around industrial zones and rural towns.
The first section opened in 2005 to coincide with the world expo and ease access to the event site. Final completion of the ring occurred about ten years later, forming a continuous loop around the industrial heartland of the region.
The ring road allows commuters to travel daily between the industrial cities of the region without crossing city centres. Drivers stop at service areas where regional food and souvenirs from different prefectures are on offer.
Four lanes run from the south to roughly the middle of the route, after which the highway narrows to two lanes until the northern end. Service areas along the way are spaced at relatively regular intervals and offer restrooms and food.
The route officially carries the number 475 even though it operates as an expressway and charges tolls. This dual designation makes it one of the few projects where a simple national route number also defines a modern ring highway.
