Yokkaichi, Industrial port city in Mie Prefecture, Japan

Yokkaichi is a port city in Mie Prefecture along Ise Bay, where industrial facilities alternate with residential neighborhoods and public spaces. The city extends from the Pacific coast to the eastern foothills of the Suzuka Mountains, linking coastal areas with inland hills.

Markets held on the fourth day of each month since the Kamakura period gave the city its name and made it an early trading post. The port later developed into an industrial center, attracting manufacturing facilities and international trade.

The name of this city comes from markets held on the fourth day of each month, which established its role as a trading center. During the Dai Yokkaichi Matsuri, a mechanical figure called O-Nyudo moves through the streets, standing over 10 meters tall and drawing crowds.

The port has terminals for containers, automobiles, and raw materials that serve regional industries. Visitors can walk along the waterfront promenade and see the bay and shipping activity.

Banko ceramics have been made here since the Edo period using brown clay, with teapots often featuring multiple spouts and handles. This technique comes from local workshops and is rarely seen in other parts of Japan.
