Ogaki, Manufacturing city in Gifu Prefecture, Japan
Ogaki is a manufacturing city in Gifu Prefecture that spreads across the Nobi Plain and lies along the Ibi River. Factories and residential quarters alternate, with parks along the waterways and broad streets running through the center.
The settlement grew after the construction of a fortress in 1535, which became an important control point during the Edo period. After 2006 the city merged with two neighboring towns and took its present form.
The November festival honors the poet Matsuo Basho, who ended his famous journey here, with readings and traditional performances across town. Visitors see students in kimono and small exhibitions presenting his verses and travel diaries.
Several universities and public schools are scattered across the city and make the place especially busy on weekdays. Those who want to explore the waterways will find footpaths along the banks and small bridges connecting the different districts.
The city boundary forms three separate sections since the merger with neighboring towns, divided from each other by other municipalities. Some residents must drive through foreign administrative territory to travel from one district to another.
