Kitanosawa Falls is a waterfall in Yahaba, Japan, dropping about 13 meters over rocky ground and stretching about 3 meters wide. A smaller waterfall called Nusakake Falls, around 7 meters high and shaped in two steps, sits close by.
In the past, mountaineers climbing nearby Mt. Nanasho would stop at the falls to leave coins as offerings to the mountain gods. This practice was a way of asking for safe passage through the mountains.
The falls are easy to reach on foot and are best visited during daylight hours since there is little lighting in the area after dark. The stones near the water can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially in wet or cold weather.
In colder months, parts of the falls can freeze over, forming ice shapes along the rocks that look quite different from the summer flow. This seasonal change draws visitors who return specifically to see the winter version of the falls.
