Gankyō-ji, Buddhist temple in Morioka, Japan
The temple features a main hall with a Shakyamuni Buddha statue, surrounded by gardens filled with stone sculptures and meditation spaces throughout the grounds.
Established in 1394 by Nanbu Moriyuki in Sannohe, the temple relocated to Morioka Castle in 1601 following orders from the Tokugawa shogunate.
The Rakan-do Hall houses an extraordinary collection of 499 Buddhist disciple statues, crafted by nine Kyoto artisans between 1731 and 1735.
Visitors can access the temple seven days a week from 9:00 to 16:00, with entrance fees of 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for children.
The temple's collection of Rakan statues includes unexpected depictions of historical figures such as Kublai Khan and Marco Polo among Buddhist disciples.
