南昌荘, Historical residence in Morioka, Japan.
Nanshoso is a wooden residence with glass corridors that frame views of the surrounding garden landscape. The structure spans about 3,300 square meters (35,500 square feet) and blends interior and exterior spaces in a cohesive design.
The residence was built in 1885 by businessman Yasunori Segawa and retained its modern Japanese architectural style through multiple ownership changes. It underwent several expansions over time while respecting its original design philosophy.
The residence hosts rotating exhibitions year-round, from traditional doll displays to pottery collections, reflecting how people engage with Japanese artistic craftsmanship. These collections show the importance of handmade objects in the local cultural identity.
The residence is located in Shimizu-cho and is accessible by public bus from Morioka Station followed by a short walk. On-site parking is available for those arriving by car.
The garden contains a 200-year-old Takasago pine tree, a species valued in Japan for its longevity. Alongside this stand weeping katsura trees found in the Morioka region, arranged around a central pond.
