Maegami-ji

Maegami-ji, Buddhist temple in Saijo, Japan.

Maegami-ji is a Buddhist temple situated at the base of Mount Ishizuchi, featuring a main hall with distinctive corridors extending from both sides of the structure. The complex comprises multiple buildings that together form a significant religious center in this region.

Emperor Kanmu founded this temple as an imperial sanctuary between 781 and 806, constructing seven buildings at this sacred mountain. Early imperial patronage established it as a major center of Buddhism in the region.

The temple serves as the headquarters of the Shingon Ishizuchi sect and maintains historical connections with the imperial family and former feudal lords. This role continues to shape its spiritual importance and draws followers of this Buddhist tradition.

The temple is accessible by a 10-minute walk from Ishizuchiyama Station and offers free parking for about 30 vehicles. The best time to visit is between 7:00 and 17:00 when the site is open and fully accessible.

In July, a mountain opening ceremony takes place where white-robed practitioners ascend to the inner temple while chanting Buddhist sutras. This annual ceremony draws pilgrims who connect the mountain with living religious traditions.
