Mount Nagiso, Mountain summit in Nagiso, Japan
Mount Nagiso is a mountain summit in the Central Alps of Japan, located in the town of Nagiso in Nagano Prefecture, with steep granite slopes covered by thick conifer forests. Several trails run across its flanks, passing through the dense woodland that is typical of this alpine area.
This mountain served for centuries as a training ground for mountain ascetics following Japanese Shugendo practices, who came to its slopes in search of spiritual discipline. This religious use shaped the way local communities have related to the mountain ever since.
Local people connect this mountain to stories about the samurai general Kintoki, a figure whose legends remain alive in the surrounding villages. Small shrines along the trails reflect this local tradition and are easy to notice during the climb.
The mountain can be reached from two main starting points: the Araragi route near Ogoshi bus stop, and the Uenohara route that begins at Nagiso Station. Visitors arriving by car will find free parking on the Uenohara side, which makes it a convenient option for those driving.
The climbing routes on this mountain are fitted with wooden ladders and staircases built directly into the steep sections of the trail. This setup makes it a well-used training spot for climbers preparing for harder peaks elsewhere in Japan.
