Natori River, River system in central Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
The Natori River originates in Mount Kamuro and flows through the cities of Natori and Sendai before emptying into Sendai Bay. Two major dams, Okura and Kamafusa, control its water flow and supply water to the surrounding region.
The river was severely impacted during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake when a tsunami altered its natural course and ecological balance. Recovery and restoration efforts took place over several years following this disaster.
Local fishing communities maintain traditional ties to the river, where residents harvest ayu fish and clams from its waters as they have for many generations.
The river is accessible for walking and exploring, especially in its upper section where several viewpoints are available. The best time to visit is during warmer months when trails and natural areas are easier to navigate.
The upper section features Futakuchi Gorge with striking rock formations and the impressive Akiu Falls. These geological features attract visitors interested in dramatic landscape formations and the river's most scenic area.
