Shijō Kofun Cluster

The Shijō Kofun Cluster is a group of burial mounds from ancient times located across a large open area in Kashihara. The site includes more than 30 individual mounds of varying sizes, some shaped like keyholes and others rounded, all dating from several centuries of early Japanese history.

The mounds were built between the 3rd and 7th centuries as burial places for important leaders and nobility of their time. The group of tombs shows how burial practices changed and developed across these several centuries.

The tombs reveal how much ancient people valued craftsmanship and artistry through the bronze objects and clay figurines discovered inside. These items tell us what mattered to the people who lived here centuries ago.

The site welcomes visitors year-round in an open outdoor setting with few facilities available. Comfortable walking shoes and water are recommended since you will be exploring across grassy terrain.

Ground scans suggest that some of the larger mounds may still hide unknown burial chambers inside them. These hidden spaces could reveal new details about the lives of the people buried there.
