NAOJ Mitaka Campus, Astronomical research campus and museum in Mitaka, Japan
The National Astronomical Observatory campus contains multiple observatories, research laboratories, and educational facilities spread across a forested area in western Tokyo.
The observatory grounds were established in 1909 when scientists sought a location away from Tokyo's increasing light interference for astronomical observations.
The facility maintains several preserved buildings recognized as Tangible Cultural Properties, including the original 20-cm Telescope Dome from 1921.
Visitors can explore the grounds between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with entry requiring registration at the security guard house near the main entrance.
The campus houses the Tenmondai-Konai Kofun, an ancient burial mound from the Yayoi period, integrating archaeological heritage with modern science facilities.
