Oshima Bridge, Road bridge in Saikai, Japan.
Oshima Bridge is a road bridge in the Saikai region that spans roughly 1.7 kilometers across the water and connects the mainland to an island community. The structure rises noticeably as you walk or drive across, designed with a curved approach that makes it visible from far away.
This bridge opened in 2004 and became an important engineering project for the region at that time. It created the first direct road link between previously isolated island communities and the mainland.
The bridge's presence has transformed local transportation patterns, enabling residents to maintain stronger connections with neighboring communities across the water.
The best time to cross is during daylight when visibility is good and the slope is easier to manage. You can walk or cycle, but prepare for the gradient and the long distance across open water.
The two sides of the bridge have different slope angles that you notice as you travel across. This design choice reflects how engineers adapted the structure to the local geography and space constraints.
