Sasebo City Museum Shimanose Art Center

Sasebo City Museum Shimanose Art Center is a modern building housing exhibition rooms with archaeological finds, artifacts from the local area, and a range of art collections. The displays cover both prehistoric objects and contemporary artistic works from different periods and styles.

The museum opened in 1983 and houses one of the world's oldest pottery collections, including Toryumon pieces from the Stone Age. These objects mark the beginning of pottery-making in this region going back approximately 12000 years.

The museum displays pottery and tools from the Senpuku-ji Cave, telling the story of how people lived and developed their skills in this region over thousands of years. You can see how daily life and craftsmanship changed across different periods.

The building is roughly 20 minutes on foot from JR Sasebo Station, making it accessible by public transportation and local transport. The rooms are clearly laid out, allowing visitors to move through the exhibition at their own pace.

The collection includes comparative displays of human skeletal structures, offering insight into the biological development of people in this region. This educational approach brings together archaeology and natural science in a single space.
