塩狩峠, Mountain pass between Pippu and Wasamu, Hokkaido, Japan
Shiokari Pass is a mountain pass in Hokkaido that connects the Nayoro Basin with the Kamikawa Basin through steep mountain terrain. The modern route relies on the Dōō Expressway, which opened in 2000 and improved travel between the towns of Pippu and Wasamu.
The pass opened as a provisional prefectural road in 1898 and received significant upgrades in 1973. A new route with a gentler gradient was completed in 1991.
The pass became known through a novel by Ayako Miura that tells the story of a railway worker who gave his life to prevent a train accident in 1909. This tale has shaped how the place is remembered and valued by local communities and travelers.
Spring is the best time to visit, when the cherry trees in the park are in full bloom. The area is accessible on foot with clear paths that make exploring easy and safe.
The Wassamu Shiokari Pass Park contains 1,600 Ezo mountain cherry trees spread across the slopes. This large collection creates a striking display of blossoms in spring that draws visitors from the surrounding region.
