大通公園

Odori Park is a long green strip stretching about 1.5 kilometers from east to west through Sapporo's downtown. It includes shaded areas with trees, water fountains, a stage for performances, and open spaces designed for people to gather and rest.

The land was first created in 1869 as a firebreak during Sapporo's development as a city. Over the decades it changed purposes several times before eventually becoming the public park that exists today.

The park hosts seasonal gatherings that bring together locals and visitors to celebrate traditional festivals tied to the region. You can observe how people interact with the space during these occasions, revealing deep ties to local customs and the rhythm of the seasons.

The park is easy to walk through and offers plenty of places to sit and watch city life. Pathways are well-maintained and there is plenty of shade from the many trees throughout the space.

The park acts as a geographical dividing line splitting the city into two distinct areas with different characters. Government buildings and official institutions sit to the north, while the bustling entertainment district begins to the south.
