Grand Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of Osaka, Catholic cathedral in Tamatsukuri, Japan
The Grand Cathedral of the Virgin Mary stands 39.4 meters tall and is built of reinforced concrete in Tamatsukuri. Its interior displays 100 stained glass windows showing scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary.
The original Saint Agnes Church was founded in 1894 but was destroyed during World War II air raids. The current structure was rebuilt at this location in 1963.
Statues of Japanese feudal lords Takayama Ukon and Hosokawa Gracia stand on the grounds, both known for converting to Christianity. They represent a bridge between Japanese history and Catholic faith.
The site is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Daily masses are held in multiple languages including Japanese, English, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tagalog.
The building houses a large pipe organ with 2,400 pipes, making it one of the largest in Japan. Inside hangs artwork by renowned artist Insho Domoto, including a painting titled 'The Last Day of Lady Gracia'.
