奥日立きららの里, Recreational park in Hitachi, Japan
Oku-Hitachi Kirara no Sato is a leisure park set in the forested mountains near the city of Hitachi, in Ibaraki Prefecture. The grounds are divided into several zones, including play areas, a farm animal section, rides, and walking paths through natural terrain.
The park opened in 1994 as a way to bring outdoor leisure to the mountain area surrounding Hitachi. It was built with families in mind, filling a gap for local communities with limited access to large urban parks.
The name Kirara no Sato loosely translates to 'village of sparkling light,' which reflects the way the park presents nature as something to observe and touch rather than simply pass through. Visitors often spend time at the animal area, where children can feed and pet farm animals at close range, a type of hands-on experience that is common in Japanese family parks.
The park is open mainly during the warmer months, and sturdy shoes are a good idea since the ground is uneven and some paths lead uphill. Most areas are accessible to visitors of all ages, though the hilly layout means you should plan for a fair amount of walking.
The park offers overnight stays in log cabins set within the forested grounds, something many day visitors do not realize is available. Staying the night lets you experience the same space in a completely different way, once the daytime crowds have gone.
