Okukinu Onsenkyō, Traditional hot spring resort in Nikko, Japan
Okukinu Onsenkyō is a traditional hot spring resort with four facilities—Kaniyu, Teshirosawa, Nikkosawa, and Haccho-No-Yu—set within ancient beech forests at 1,300 meters elevation. Natural mineral water flows directly from underground sources to feed the bathing facilities.
The resort was developed to access the region's natural mineral springs and long operated without electrical power for an authentic mountain lodge experience. In 1988, it finally received electrical connections while maintaining its traditional operations.
Each inn observes traditional Japanese bathing customs with indoor and outdoor baths fed by natural mineral water from underground springs. These practices shape how guests experience their stay and reflect the region's approach to relaxation and wellness.
Access requires parking at the Meoto-Buchi lot and arranging pickup service with your chosen inn, or preparing for a walk of about 90 minutes to reach the complex. The path follows a forest route that connects the parking area to the bathing facilities.
The springs contain naturally flowing neutral hypotonic mineral water that offers different therapeutic properties across the four locations. Visitors can experience these variations by moving between the different baths and noticing how the water changes.
