Megami Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Nagasaki, Japan
Megami Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning Nagasaki Harbor, marked by two tall towers with diagonal steel cables that support the roadway below. The structure links the southern and western districts of the city together.
The bridge opened in late 2005 and created the first direct connection between southern and western Nagasaki. This link significantly shortened travel time between these two areas.
The name Megami comes from Japanese and means Goddess, reflecting how local people view the bridge as a symbol of modern progress for the city. Walking across it, you sense how important this structure is to connecting different parts of Nagasaki.
You can walk across for free, though vehicles need to pay a toll to use the bridge. It is best to cross during daylight hours and watch out for traffic, especially during busy times of day.
Small glass windows are built into the walkway that let you look down about 200 feet (65 meters) to the water below. These openings give visitors an unexpected way to experience the height and view over the harbor.
