Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery, Industrial shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery is an active shipbuilding and machinery complex with three main sites across Nagasaki Prefecture. The yard spans Koyagi, Nagasaki City, and Isahaya, with each facility focused on different shipbuilding and engineering tasks.

The site began in 1857 as a government warship repair workshop before passing into private ownership in 1884. Mitsubishi took over management and expanded production lines to build both military and civilian vessels.

The name Nagasaki Yotetsusho refers to the early foundry that housed Japan's first Western-style metalworking equipment. Visitors can only glimpse the scale of today's operations from a distance, as the yard remains in active industrial use.

The yard remains an active industrial site with no public tours, so visitors rely on external viewpoints. The nearby waterfront area offers views of the docks and finished vessels in the bay.

The Isahaya facility produces aerospace components, including attitude control systems for rockets. This technical diversity shows how traditional shipbuilding skills have expanded into aviation and space fields.
