中町教会

Nakamachi Church is a Catholic church building in Nagasaki with white stone walls and a distinctive tall spire. The outer structure retains its original form from the late 1800s and remains visible from the area around the train station.

The building was constructed between 1891 and 1897 based on a design by French priest Papinot. Financial support from French women and local benefactors made the construction possible.

The building holds statues of Saint Thomas Nishi and fifteen companions in its garden, honoring Japanese Christians who suffered persecution centuries ago. These monuments reflect a faith tradition that has remained important to local communities across generations.

The church is accessible for visits during daytime hours and sits in a convenient location near the train station. The site is easy to reach by public transportation and is located in an active part of the city.

The structure is officially recognized as an atomic bomb heritage site because its outer walls and spire survived the 1945 atomic bombing. This makes it one of the few buildings that endured this catastrophe.
