Fukusai-ji, Buddhist temple from Three Chinese Temples in Nagasaki, Japan

Fukusai-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nagasaki housing a large statue of the goddess Kannon that sits atop a turtle structure. The building was reconstructed after wartime destruction and now stands as a memorial site.

The temple was founded in 1628 by Chinese immigrants and was one of the few places where Buddhists could practice their faith during Japan's period of isolation. The original structure was destroyed by the atomic bombing in 1945 and later rebuilt.

The temple functions as a place where visitors come to remember those lost during World War II. Inside, the space is designed to encourage quiet reflection and respectful remembrance.

The temple is straightforward to visit with standard daily hours throughout the year. Visitors should be prepared for stairs and should plan to walk through the grounds to see everything.

Inside the temple swings a large pendulum that demonstrates physical laws in a compelling way. This is a surprising place to experience science and spirituality side by side.
