Kōfuku-ji, Buddhist temple in Teramachi district, Nagasaki, Japan

Kōfuku-ji is a temple with red-painted buildings and Chinese-inspired architectural elements in Nagasaki's Teramachi district. The grounds contain multiple structures featuring arched ceilings, carved details, and landscaped gardens that shape the layout.

The temple was founded in 1624 by Chinese monk Shin'en as the first Obaku Zen Buddhist school in Japan. This establishment marked the beginning of this school's expansion throughout the country.

The temple honors Mazu, the sea goddess, through ceremonies and practices that visitors can experience today. This devotion reflects how Chinese spiritual traditions took root and became part of local religious life.

The temple is located in central Nagasaki and remains open most days for visitor access. Keep in mind that this is an active place of worship where respectful behavior is expected.

The temple received a new bell in 2021 for its bell tower after the original was taken during World War II. This bell symbolizes restoration following a difficult period.
