Kōfuku-ji, Buddhist temple in Teramachi district, Nagasaki, Japan
The red-painted temple features a main hall with arched ceilings, Chinese-style carvings, traditional gardens, and multiple historic structures within its grounds.
Built in 1624 by Chinese monk Shin'en, Kofuku-ji became the first temple of the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism established in Japan.
The temple maintains strong ties with Chinese heritage through its architecture, religious practices, and regular ceremonies dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess.
Located at 4-32 Teramachi, the temple opens daily from 7:00 to 17:00, with entrance fees of 300 yen for adults and reduced rates for students.
The temple bell tower received a new bell in 2021 to replace the original one, which was requisitioned during World War II.
