Higashi-Yamate No. 12 Building

Higashi-Yamate No. 12 Building is a house museum with complete Western architectural design typical of 19th-century European homes. The structure preserves its original layout with multiple rooms that show how residents arranged and used the space during that era.

Built in 1868 during the Meiji period, the structure initially served as the Russian and American consulates. It was later converted into an educational museum to preserve the history of this international presence in the city.

The building shows how foreign residents lived and worked in Nagasaki during the late 1800s. The displayed furnishings and personal items reflect a period when the city was a key point of contact between Japan and the Western world.

The museum is about an 8-minute walk from the Medical Center Streetcar Stop and welcomes visitors daily. The house is straightforward to navigate, and you can explore the rooms at your own pace.

The building retains its original interior structure and layout, making it one of the few unmodified Western-style constructions from the Meiji period. This authenticity lets visitors see exactly how spaces were divided and arranged during that time.
