Ozenuma, Mountain lake in Katashina and Hinoemata, Japan
Ozenuma is a mountain lake straddling the border between Katashina and Hinoemata villages within Oze National Park. The water body sits at the eastern edge of the Ozegahara plateau and is surrounded by open moorland rather than forest.
The lake formed thousands of years ago through volcanic activity from Mount Hiuchigatake. This volcanic origin shaped the entire landscape of the surrounding plateau and continues to influence the local geology today.
The name comes from the Ainu language and refers to the wetland character of the area. Today, visitors can see rare alpine plants growing naturally along the shoreline, which locals and botanists value as an important natural heritage site.
Wooden boardwalks encircle the shoreline and link different starting points from both villages via marked hiking trails. The paths are generally level and well-maintained, making the walk accessible for most visitors.
The surrounding Ozegahara wetland complex thrives on rare serpentinite rock formations found in only a few places in Japan. These geological conditions allow specialized plant species to flourish that cannot survive in typical alpine soils elsewhere.
