Sudagai Dam, Gravity dam in Minakami, Japan
Sudagai Dam is a concrete gravity dam across the Tone River in the Minakami region, constructed to manage water flow and harness its power. The structure holds back a large body of water used for different purposes by the local area.
Construction began in 1952 and finished in 1955 as part of post-war development efforts in the Gunma region. This infrastructure project reflected Japan's push to rebuild and modernize during that period.
The dam forms part of the Tone River upstream group, reflecting Japanese engineering practices in water management and hydroelectric power generation.
The site is open to visitors year-round and offers good access to view the structure and walk around the water area. You can explore at your own pace without much difficulty.
The dam's catchment area covers 310 square kilometers, supplying water for agriculture, industry, and maintaining river flow while generating 44.8 megawatts of hydroelectric power.
