Mount Azumaya

Mount Azumaya in the Mikuni Mountains rises to 1,341 meters (4,400 feet) and is covered by dense forests that blanket its slopes. The mountain displays the typical terrain of this highland region, with steep sections and natural paths winding through the trees.

The mountain formed hundreds of thousands of years ago through volcanic activity that shaped the Mikuni range. Natural erosion over vast periods of time has molded its current appearance and slopes.

Mount Azumaya holds the seventh position in the 100 Famous Gunma Mountains list, making it a significant landmark in Japanese geography.

Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit from different access points around the Minakami region. Visitors should bring weather-resistant clothing and prepare for slippery conditions, especially on the wetter forest sections.

The mountain sits at a location where views extend across several prefectural boundaries. On clear days, visitors can see into neighboring mountain regions that belong to different administrative areas.
