Minakami

Minakami is a mountain resort town in Tone district where natural hot springs and alpine scenery shape daily life. The settlement includes portions of Joshinetsu-kogen National Park and spreads across forested valleys and peaks.

The Mikuni Kaido trade route from the Heian period linked Takasaki with Niigata and passed through nine post stations on present-day municipal land. This route supported commerce and travel between regions for centuries.

The Takumi no Sato craft center invites visitors to try traditional Japanese arts, including pottery, papermaking, and textile weaving. These activities showcase techniques passed down through generations and still practiced today.

Access follows mountain roads and regional rail lines that wind through valleys. Winter visitors should bring snow gear and warm clothing, as elevation brings harsh weather.

Doai Station within the municipal area ranks as the deepest railway station in Japan and sits far below ground. Passengers climb or descend a long series of staircases to reach the trains.
