Gunma Astronomical Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Takayama, Japan
Gunma Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in Takayama, Gunma Prefecture, equipped with a large reflector telescope and several supporting instruments. The facility sits on a hillside away from the town and is open to both researchers and the general public.
The observatory opened in 1999 under the direction of astronomer Yoshihide Kozai, at a time when public interest in space science was growing across Japan. It was built to serve both professional research and wider outreach from the start.
The observatory holds regular public evenings where visitors can look through the large telescope and follow explanations from astronomers. These sessions draw families and school groups who come to see the sky in a way they cannot at home.
The observatory is outside the town of Takayama and is most easily reached by taxi, as public transport connections are limited. Visiting in the evening is worth considering, as public observation sessions are typically held after dark.
The municipality around the observatory has introduced specific lighting rules to keep the surrounding night sky as dark as possible. Visitors who stay overnight in the area can experience a level of darkness that is rare in Japan today.
