Takehisa Yumeji Ikaho Memorial, Biographical art museum in Ikaho Onsen, Japan
The Takehisa Yumeji Ikaho Memorial is a biographical art museum in Ikaho Onsen, a hot spring resort in Gunma Prefecture, dedicated to the painter, poet, and illustrator Takehisa Yumeji. It occupies several connected buildings and displays paintings, poems, and personal objects from different phases of his life and work.
Takehisa Yumeji visited Ikaho several times and found in the resort's surroundings a source of inspiration for his work. The museum opened in 1981 to honor his legacy and keep his work accessible to future generations.
Yumeji is known for his images of women with long, slender faces and a slightly melancholy look, a style so personal that it became known as the Yumeji Style. Visitors can see this clearly in the paintings on display, where soft lines and gentle colors define every figure.
The museum is located within the Ikaho Onsen resort and is easy to reach on foot from the town's main stone stairway street. Pairing the visit with a walk through the resort is a natural way to spend a day there.
Alongside his paintings and poems, the museum holds a collection of antique music boxes from several countries that play at set times each day. This side of the collection takes many visitors by surprise, as it has little to do with the art on the walls.
