Kayano Site, Archaeological site in Shintō, Japan
Kayano Site is an archaeological location at the southeastern foot of Mount Soma in Gunma Prefecture. Excavations have uncovered house foundations, burial areas, and a large collection of artifacts from ancient communities.
The site was discovered in 1989 during agricultural work and dates back to the late Jomon period, roughly 2500 to 3000 years ago. It represents settlement activity in central Japan during this prehistoric time.
The foundations and artifacts found at the site demonstrate the daily activities and settlement patterns of prehistoric communities in central Japan.
The excavated remains and collected artifacts are displayed at a museum in the village, making them accessible to visitors in a controlled setting. The location can be reached by car with convenient access from major routes.
The excavation yielded a remarkable collection of red and black pulley-shaped clay ornaments, along with a clay figure wearing these items. This pairing reveals that such objects were actually worn as personal adornment by inhabitants.
