Ikaho Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Shibukawa, Japan
The Ikaho Ropeway connects two mountain stations with a cable line that travels roughly 500 meters between them. The ride climbs through a forested slope and takes about four minutes to complete.
The ropeway began service in 1962, creating a mechanical link between the valley and the mountain. Since then it has remained a transportation fixture connecting two elevation points.
The base station draws its name from a bird celebrated in classical Japanese poetry and literature. The reference connects visitors to stories that have been told in this region for centuries.
Cabins depart regularly throughout the day with short wait times during most hours. The trip up is brief, so visitors can plan to combine this ride with other activities on or around the mountain.
Each cabin holds roughly 20 passengers, making it roomier than many other mountain ropeways in the region. On clear days, the view extends across the surrounding plains below.
