Haruna Shrine, Shinto shrine in Harunasan-machi, Japan

Haruna Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Harunasan-machi, Japan, with buildings arranged around the towering Misugata Rock and fitted into the steep mountain slopes. The complex spreads across multiple levels connected by stone staircases, and features timber constructions adorned with carved decorations and red lacquer work.

Emperor Yōmei ordered the founding of this sanctuary in 586, after which it maintained close ties with Kan'ei-ji temple in Ueno for over a millennium. This bond with a Buddhist center ended only with the Meiji-era religious reforms that separated Shinto shrines from Buddhist influences.

Worshippers come here to ask for success in business ventures and happiness in marriage, often directing their prayers at specific spots within the complex. The connection to nature appears in the way natural rock formations are treated as sacred elements, with pilgrims pausing before these stone witnesses during their visits.

An hourly bus from Takasaki Station's West Exit runs to the nearest stop, from which a short uphill walk of around 400 meters (about 1,300 feet) leads to the shrine grounds. The path climbs past seven stone deity statues, and visitors should wear sturdy footwear as some sections can be steep.

The main sanctuary rebuilt in 1806 incorporates the massive rock wall directly into its architecture, requiring visitors to pass beneath overhanging stone to reach the interior. This merging of built structure and natural rock gives the place an atmosphere not found in many other religious sites across Japan.
