前橋敷島公園ばら園, Rose garden in Shikishima Park, Maebashi, Japan
The Maebashi Shikishima Park Rose Garden is a large flowering garden with around 7,000 rose plants representing 600 different varieties spread across 4.5 hectares. The site sits within a forested park setting and is divided into several thematic sections.
The garden was established in 1971 and underwent major renovation work before reopening in 2008 as part of a national horticultural exhibition in Gunma. This redesign transformed it into a more modern facility with expanded collections.
The garden is organized by country of origin, displaying roses from America, England, and Japan, with each section reflecting distinct growing traditions and methods. Visitors can observe these different approaches while walking through the sections.
The garden is open daily and visitors should allow time for an extended walk through the various sections. Getting there by public transportation from the city center is the most convenient option.
The garden houses the exclusive Akagi no Kagayaki rose variety, specifically bred to commemorate the 2008 national horticultural exhibition. This variety cannot be found anywhere else and is a distinctive feature of the place.
