Shikishima Park, Urban park in Maebashi, Japan
Shikishima Park is a 37.6-hectare (93-acre) green space stretched between the Tone and Hirose Rivers, combining sports, recreational, and educational zones in one large setting. The grounds feature pine groves, a rose garden with thousands of plants, and open spaces designed for both activity and rest.
The park received its official status in 1925 with the construction of a sports stadium, marking the start of its development after the city acquired national forest land in 1922. These early decisions transformed the site from woodland into a multipurpose public destination.
The Silk Industry Memorial Museum tells the story of Maebashi's past as a major silk production hub through displays and objects that reveal how the craft shaped the city's identity. Walking through its exhibits, visitors understand the deep connection between this work and everyday life here.
The park is divided into two main sections: a sports area managed by Gunma Prefecture and a recreation area run by Maebashi City, each with its own facilities and focus. Visitors should check which section matches their interests before planning their visit to make the most of their time.
The rose garden holds around 7,000 rose plants in roughly 600 varieties, creating a colorful display that stands out against the surrounding forest. During cherry blossom season, the park adds evening light displays that highlight the blooming trees and create a special atmosphere after dark.
