Shikishima Park, Urban park in Maebashi, Japan
Shikishima Park is a large public park in Maebashi, Japan, sitting between the Tone and Hirose Rivers. It contains pine groves, a rose garden, open lawns, and sports facilities spread across two connected sections.
The land was originally national forest and was taken over by the city in 1922, followed by the construction of a sports stadium in 1925 that marked the start of the park's formal development. Over the following decades, new facilities and gardens were added as the site grew into its current form.
The Silk Industry Memorial Museum inside the park shows how silk production shaped daily life in Maebashi for generations. Visitors can see tools and objects that connect directly to the work once done in the city's former silk factories.
The park is split into a sports section managed by Gunma Prefecture and a recreation section run by Maebashi City, each with different facilities. It helps to decide which area you want to focus on before arriving, as they are separate spaces with their own entrances and layout.
The rose garden features around 600 different rose varieties, making it one of the most varied in the region. During cherry blossom season, the trees are lit up in the evenings, giving visitors a reason to visit after dark as well.
