Yamaga Onsen, Thermal spring complex in Yamaga, Japan.
Yamaga Onsen is a hot spring resort in the city of Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. The thermal waters rise from natural underground sources and are available through the public bathhouse Sakura-yu as well as through ryokan, the traditional Japanese inns that line the town's streets.
Written records mention Yamaga Onsen as far back as the Heian period, over a thousand years ago, making it one of the oldest documented hot springs on Kyushu. Over the following centuries, the springs attracted pilgrims, warriors, and traveling merchants, and a small resort town gradually grew around them.
The Yamaga Chochin Matsuri, the town's lantern festival held each summer, is deeply tied to the hot spring town's identity. Dancers perform with handmade paper lanterns balanced on their heads, a tradition passed down through generations that shapes how locals see their own community.
The public bathhouse Sakura-yu sits in the town center and is easy to reach on foot, while most ryokan are within walking distance of the main spring area. Booking a ryokan stay well in advance is a good idea, as availability can get tight during the summer festival period.
The water at Yamaga Onsen is classified as tanjun onsen, meaning it has very low mineral content compared to many other Japanese hot springs. This makes it unusually gentle on the skin, which is why it is often recommended for people with sensitive skin or for long, repeated soaking.
