平原の滝

平原の滝, Waterfall in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Hirahara Falls descends across multiple tiers through thick forest, with water flowing down successive natural rock ledges. Each level creates its own pool and spray pattern as the stream continues its path downward.

The falls became an important water source during the Edo period, when local farmers developed irrigation systems to support their fields. This practical relationship with the waterfall shaped regional agriculture for centuries.

The falls hold importance in Japanese nature appreciation traditions, with many photographers capturing its seasonal changes throughout the year.

The falls are reached by a short walk from the parking area, with marked trails leading through the forest to several viewing points. Wooden platforms along the route provide safe spots to observe the water and surrounding scenery.

During cold months, the mist from the falls freezes on nearby branches and vegetation, creating delicate ice coatings that transform the forest. This temporary ice display typically appears for only a few weeks each winter.
