Grave of the Seven Martyrs

Grave of the Seven Martyrs, Memorial tomb in Nishio, Japan

The Grave of the Seven Martyrs is a memorial site in Higashihazu-chō that contains seven individual tombstones, each with inscriptions about the people buried there. The stones stand side by side in a row on a small, maintained plot surrounded by low vegetation and trees.

The graves were created in the late 1950s as a resting place for seven executed military leaders, including high-ranking officers from the World War II period. The site came about after remains were transferred from a temporary location.

The simplicity of the site follows Japanese burial tradition, where dignity is expressed without ornament. Visitors find space for quiet reflection and see how tradition and controversial memory exist in the same place.

Access is possible year-round, and the site sits in a quiet residential neighborhood within Higashihazu-chō. Visitors should keep in mind that the memorial is controversial and show respect if locals are present.

The graves are among a small number of burial sites in Japan associated with war crimes trials, and they draw a mix of visitors. Some come for historical interest, others for personal or political reasons.
