Takeshima Aquarium, Public aquarium in Gamagori, Japan
Takeshima Aquarium presents more than 500 species of marine life from Mikawa Bay across several floors, including fish from different depths and invertebrates. The exhibition tanks are organized by habitat and offer insight into the underwater world of the coastal region.
The facility opened in 1956 and has since remained one of the smallest aquariums in Japan. Despite its limited space, the collection has expanded over the decades to feature deep-sea species.
Fishermen from nearby ports regularly supply the aquarium with creatures from their catches, so exhibits change with the seasons. This link between local fishing boats and the displays reflects the daily rhythm of Mikawa Bay.
The site lies near Takeshima Island and opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Parking is located directly at the entrance and the interior pathways are arranged in a compact space.
A shallow pool allows visitors to touch giant isopods and spider crabs under staff guidance. These creatures usually come from depths of several hundred meters and are rarely displayed alive.
