Anrakuji, Buddhist temple in Gamagōri, Japan
Anrakuji is a Buddhist temple in Gamagori, a coastal city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The grounds include wooden buildings, stone lanterns, and a gate marking the entry to the sacred areas.
The temple was founded during the Heian period and served as a religious center in the Gamagori area for many centuries. Its buildings were rebuilt and renewed over time, but the site's religious function remained continuous.
Anrakuji belongs to the Shingon school of Buddhism, a tradition that places great importance on ritual, chanting, and symbolic imagery. Visitors can see traces of this in the altar decorations and in the small offerings left by local worshippers throughout the grounds.
The temple is accessible during daylight hours, and visiting early in the morning gives the best chance of experiencing the grounds without many other people around. Visitors are expected to speak quietly and remove their shoes before entering any of the buildings.
Anrakuji is said to be part of a group of temples laid out along an old pilgrimage route on the Atsumi Peninsula, a route that is now little known outside the region. Visitors who look carefully around the grounds may notice old stone markers that refer to this forgotten connection.
