Kaminogō Castle

Kaminogō Castle, Medieval castle in Gamagori, Japan

Description

Kaminogō Castle is a medieval fortress in Gamagori situated on a hilltop overlooking Mikawawan Bay in Aichi Prefecture. The ruins span a large area and display remains of defensive walls, water channels, and fortification structures from that period.

History

The castle was captured in 1562 by Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Sengoku period through a successful assault against the Imagawa clan. This victory marked a significant step in Ieyasu's rise to power amid Japan's competing warlords.

Culture

The site displays traditional Japanese castle design with defensive clay walls and strategically positioned water channels. Visitors can still observe the traces of these military structures while walking through the grounds.

Practical

The grounds today are partly surrounded by residential areas and mandarin orchards, with marked paths guiding visitors through the ruins. It is best visited on a clear day to enjoy the views across the bay and surrounding landscape.
