Château de Hirayamashiro, Mountain fortress in Osumi region, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan
Located on a strategic hilltop, Hirayamashiro Castle features stone walls, wooden structures, and multiple defensive courtyards spread across different elevation levels.
Built in 1282 by Buddhist priest Ryosei Zenpo-ji, the castle served as a military stronghold until its defeat by the Shimazu clan between 1452 and 1454.
The castle grounds contained multiple religious buildings, including Amida and Kannon temples, plus shrines dedicated to Hachiman, Ise, and Kasuga deities.
Visitors can explore the remaining castle foundations, earthen walls, and dry moats while walking through the grounds of Shinsei Hachiman Shrine.
A 700-year-old ginkgo tree stands within the castle ruins, marking centuries of historical events that unfolded at this military installation.
