Former Inui House

The Inui House is a residential building in Sumiyoshi Yamate that blends traditional Japanese features with modern construction thinking. Architect Setsu Watanabe designed the structure with spaces that flow between interior and exterior areas.

The building was created in 1936 during a period when Kobe was modernizing and adopting new architectural forms from the West. This era shaped many residences in the city and reflected Japan's openness to international design trends.

The house demonstrates how residents integrated traditional Japanese living spaces with modern design elements from the early 20th century. The rooms reveal an everyday practice where local craftsmanship existed alongside new architectural ideas.

The residence is located in the Sumiyoshi Yamate district and is a pedestrian-friendly destination on Kobe's hillsides. Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes since the neighborhood sits on steep streets.

The interior preserves original details such as colored glass in the windows, displaying a mixture of Japanese and Western styles. These glass elements are a rare feature in Japanese residences from this era.
