Former Inui House, Historic house in Sumiyoshi Yamate, Japan

The Former Inui House is a historic residence in the Sumiyoshi Yamate district of Kobe, Japan. It was designed by architect Setsu Watanabe, who combined traditional Japanese spatial ideas with construction approaches that were gaining ground in Japan during the early 20th century.

The house was built in 1936, at a time when Kobe was one of Japan's most open ports and foreign influences were shaping the city's residential areas. The hillside neighborhoods of Sumiyoshi Yamate developed partly as a result of this international presence.

The house demonstrates how residents integrated traditional Japanese living spaces with modern design elements from the early 20th century. The rooms reveal an everyday practice where local craftsmanship existed alongside new architectural ideas.

The house sits on a hillside in Sumiyoshi Yamate, a residential area with steep and narrow streets, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Walking through the neighborhood on the way there gives a sense of how locals live on Kobe's slopes.

The building still has its original colored glass windows, a detail that was very rare in Japanese homes of that period. These windows let in tinted light that shifts the feel of the interior depending on the time of day.
