明照寺

Myosho-ji is a Buddhist temple in Hikone with a main hall measuring about 122 tatami mats and housing important artworks. Inside you can see an Amida Nyorai statue and memorial tablets of former clan members.

The temple was established in 1601 under the patronage of Ii Naomasa, the first lord of Hikone Domain. This founding marked an important moment in the early development of the region under his rule.

The garden Fudoraku displays traditional Zen elements with carefully positioned stones and sand patterns that represent natural landscapes. This space reflects a philosophy that visitors can experience while walking through it.

The temple is open to visitors daily, allowing you to explore the grounds at your own pace. It is advisable to wear appropriate clothing and remove your shoes when entering buildings.

The temple houses a special rotating cabinet with hand-copied Buddhist texts that followers can turn. This practice is a local custom that offers visitors a particular form of spiritual participation.
