Mount Kojin, also known as Kojinyama, is a summit located near the city of Hikone in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It sits close to Lake Biwa, and from the top you can see the lake, the city below, and the surrounding countryside.
The Kojinyama Shrine was established on the mountain centuries ago and quickly became a central point in the religious life of the Hikone area. Over time, the site grew into one of the most visited spiritual places in this part of Shiga Prefecture.
The mountain is commonly called Kojinyama, a name that comes directly from the shrine at its top. On festival days, locals gather here to take part in ceremonies that follow traditions passed down through many generations in the Hikone area.
The path to the top follows a marked trail with several thousand stone steps, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The route is manageable for most visitors, though it is worth taking your time on the steeper sections.
The shrine at the top combines Shinto and Buddhist features within the same structure, a practice known in Japan as shinbutsu-shugo. This blending of two religious traditions can be seen directly in the architecture, making it a rare example that visitors can observe up close.
