水の森公園, Public park in Sendai, Japan
Mizunomori Park is a large city park in Sendai, spanning the Aoba and Izumi districts around two reservoirs set within pine forests. Footpaths link the two water bodies and wind through the forested areas, making the whole park easy to explore on foot.
The park was founded in 1971, when Sendai began setting aside green land as the city expanded rapidly. The two reservoirs already existed before the park was created and became the natural core around which the rest of it was shaped.
In winter, Siberian swans fly in to rest on the park's reservoirs, drawing bird watchers from across the region. The combination of still water and surrounding pine trees makes this a spot that feels very different from the rest of Sendai.
The park has camping areas and free parking for those arriving by car, and several bus lines run between here and Sendai Station. Facilities for visitors with mobility challenges are available on site, so the main paths are generally accessible.
The park sits on the boundary between two city districts, which means that depending on which entrance you use, you can have quite different experiences of the same place. Walking from one reservoir to the other gives a clear sense of just how much the landscape changes across the grounds.
